We Believe
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
PENTECOSTAL CREED
GOD
There is one eternal God, but in Him is a unity of three eternals personas: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. We can talk about the trinity of God.
- Father
- God is an eternal Father, who created all of creation. He also maintains and rules over all the creation. God is holy and righteous, He is gracious and merciful and loves the people He created. God is Spirit, and He is almighty, omniscient and all-present.
- Son
- God's Son, Jesus Christ, is one with Father and is also eternal God. Jesus Christ became a human to redeem the humanity fallen under sin. He died voluntarily on the cross because of the sins of people. He rose from the dead, ascended to heaven and sits on the right side of the Father, the God. Jesus will come back to bring His people to eternal life with Him.
- Holy Spirit
- God's Holy Spirit has worked and works together with the Father and the Son. Holy Spirit is now on earth to glorify Jesus Christ as Saviour to all people. Holy Spirit helps people be born again to living hope. Holy Spirit equips those who believe in Jesus with spiritual gifts to build the church. Spiritual gifts are message of wisdom and knowledge, faith, gift of healing, gift of miraculous powers, gift to prophecy, speaking in tongues and so on (1. Cor. 12:4-10) Holy Spirit grows the fruit of the Spirit in people, in another words helps build our personality towards the model Jesus gave us.
BIBLE
The Pentecostal movement holds on to the principles of reformation in that Bible is the only basis (sola scriptura) of teachings and models of life in faith. Bible is a message from God given in written form at a certain historical time. It is unchanging and eternal Word of God. Inspired by Holy Spirit people wrote down the message from God that is necessary for people to have a way to unity with God. The Word should be translated to all languages and all generations, so that all people had a chance to hear and read the message of God in the most comprehensive form.
RIGHTEOUSNESS
God's word and Holy Spirit give faith in people. When people receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour, they will be forgiven their sins by God's grace alone, and will be reborn. Being reborn is a work of God in people, through faith. By being reborn people are given God's righteousness without their own credit. Pentecostal movement holds on to the principles of the reformation: by faith alone, by grace alonen(sola fide, sola gratia).
BAPTISM
Baptism is inseparable from being reborn. When a person has received righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ, they should be baptized in the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. Baptism symbolizes the joining of those who believe in Christ in Jesus' death. Bible describes baptism as a burial, and the baptism is an immersion in water according to that model. A baptism done like this does not need to be renewed, regardless of in which church it was given. By baptism, a believer becomes a member of the local congregation.
CONGREGATION
All those who believe in Christ are part of one congregation, the body of Christ, whose borders are not those of the local congregations and denominations. Jesus himself knows his congregation. But this unity in congregation can only be experienced in the unity of a local congregation. Those who believe in Jesus Christ and have been baptized in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit will come to the union of a local congregation. Although we talk of a congregation of believers and the members attempt to live according to the creed, neither the congregation nor its members are perfect. Congregation consists of imperfect people, who live in God's forgiveness and grace, but one day in heaven it will be a perfect and glorified congregation. The purpose of the congregation is to teach and help people by God's Word and the love for our neighbours. The leaders of the congregation are elders, chosen according to he model in the New Testament. The local pentecostal churches in Finland are independent, without a Finnish or international central rule. The economy of the congregation is based on voluntary offerings, collected traditionally during services. Congregations have founded national asociations to take care of common practical business.
HOLY COMMUNION
Congregations observe the holy communion, or braking of the bread, according to the example set by Jesus. The eating of bread and drinking of wine during the communion are to commemorate Jesus Christ, and Jesus himself is present. Communion symbolizes the unity of the congregation.
